When the pedestrian tunnel was reopened in 2019 it was the intention that glass-sided inclined lifts should replace the famous wooden escalators, now regarded as unsafe. After problems with the installers both here and in Italy, and the intervention of Covid-19, the lifts were not opened until November 2024. Each lift can hold up to 21 people or a mixture of pedestrians, cycles, wheelchairs and prams.
The old escalator remains as a static feature, only to be used in as an emergency exit. Vertical lifts are still in use at both ends of the tunnel.
